Lazy Day

I didn't sleep very well Friday night, too much going on in my head. The dermatologist called and told me that I do have basal cell skin cancer on my face. The first date they could give me for removal is October 4th. So, since my imagination blows everything out of proportion, it kept me awake.
All this is leading up to me not wanting to work on a custom quilt when I'm over-tired, because I really hate ripping. So I worked on my hour a day-for about 5 hours in between getting Keri's stuff ready for school.
I got 10 blocks done. I work slowly because I'm not the greatest piecer in the world. But I'm happy with them. The other picture is of my favorite block. I just like the colors. I know a lot of people have finished the whole quilt but I'm happy to have gotten even this far.
I even got a block done on the Harvest Spice. I figured I was on a roll, so why not?
Today, I still didn't want to go upstairs. So, after everyone left, I went to church and then called a very good friend who told me to come on over and quilt.
I just got back and I feel much better. I was a little depressed about Keri going back to school, and the Precious Twins possibly finding an apartment. The empty nest thingy is hitting me like a ton of bricks. I realized I've totally identified myself as a mom for over 20 years, so what do I do now? I have to get my butt in gear and get over it! It's just going to take a little time.

I'm going to take the custom quilt off the machine, and load an easy panto quilt that needs to be done by the weekend. Then I'll see if I can reload and finish.
For all the US people, Happy Labor day! For everyone else, have a great weekend.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad news. I'm afraid my imagination would be in overtime as well. Have you asked to be notified in the event that someone cancels so you can get it taken care of sooner? Please keep us posted on your progress and I'll have you in my prayers.

My husband has to go have a spot removed with cancer cells this week. First time he has gotten a bad report back so he was a little surprised with that news. It is just now healed up from the biopsy three weeks ago.

Keep us posted and try, though it is hard, to relax a bit.

Oh Ellen, things can only get better. The good news - if I remember right - is that basal cell skin cancer isn't that dangerous, is easily taken care of, and will happen to many, many of us if we live long enough. I know my father-in-law had little cancerous spots removed from his skin for years - and he lived to be 91 before he died of heart failure. At least you don't have melenoma - that is the bad one. Know what you mean about the empty next too - just keep telling yourself this too will pass. Soon you'll be rejoicing in all the extra room you have.

Hang in there. As cliche as it sounds, things are always worse at night. You'll be in my prayers. Hey, you found it-- thank goodness, now you can get it fixed. Keep us posted. You're never going through things alone. You've got a great family and people who care.

My prayers are with you as you wait for treatment. I also hope you find a way to enjoy your empty nest! And no matter where your kids live, you can still identify yourself as a mom...that is your most important job, whether they live at home or away!

I've been procrastinating on customer quilts too...I have 7 or 8 to do, but I've been playing. I go back to school on Wednesday, so that's when the real work will start...school, quilting and (eeek!) back to the gym!

I'm sorry to hear about your bad news too. On top of dealing with the upcoming empty nest syndrome. You are in my prayers. Your blocks look really good though, and I am sure your quilt will turn out awesome.

Amongst the bad news and the empty nest feeling, you still managed to create some beauty with your quilt squares!

Count to 10, breath and try to relax! I know that you're a worrier but find something peaceful to do and hopefully you won't be able to worry. (I know that's easier said than done!)

It seems that quilting is very healing for so many people.

Sorry to hear your bad news - but at least you know that if you didn't get immediately dragged in and scheduled... well - it's not as bad as some!

And don't think of that space as 'empty' instead realize how much better you might get along with the dil when she's not constantly there.

Eileen, they can do so many more things today than ever before, I am just amazed at how far medical science has come. I am guessing your sleepless nights are an accumulation of many things. Keep your hands busy, as you have been, and call that friend again if you need someone to chat with.

You know a lot of us fill that empty nest with quilts! I had a hard time when mine were all gone. You are right, our life revolves around their needs. Each stage has its own rewards though, and the kids do come back and bring their kids with them, eventually. It's all good! You take care!

We can all imagine how you are feeling at the moment and are thinking of you. Go on and do that easy panto - it will probably have a calming effect just to concentrate on that instead of other things.

Eileen --

I'm so sorry about your troubles! The kids, the doctors, everything. I'm only 1/2 way to the empty nest thing and I'm already trying to fill it up with new hobbies.

Let me know if we have a date in September. Some in-person time would be great for both of us.

Your hour-a-day quilt blocks look wonderful! Good Job. Hope everything goes well for you, aren't we lucky to have quilting in our lives to help take our minds off our troubles...for a while.
